Karriere? Familie ? Things You Might Not Know About Friends. Here's a look back at the series that helped get mental_floss off the ground. The show was originally called Insomnia Café .. In the early '9. 0s, the creators of Friends, David Crane and Marta Kauffman, wrote a seven- page pitch for Insomnia Café. In addition to the different title, the plot itself was quite different from what we know as Friends. For example, Ross and Rachel weren't the key relationship. Instead, Joey and Monica were supposed to be love interests. After NBC bought the pilot, the title became Friends Like Us. NBC president Warren Littlefield came up with another title that was also considered, Across the Hall. By the time they shot it, the title had switched again to Six of One. When the show premiered on September 2. Friends. 2. The cast could have been much different. On this week’s Naked And Afraid, meet Carrie Booze and Tom Touw as they battle the wilderness in Cambodia. Check out all the crazy facts on the two new survivalists. I’ve been receiving many emails regarding Eminem’s new song, “Not Afraid”. Many people are requesting that I should do a breakdown of the song and the music. A Plague Marine of Nurgle. Nurgle is the mighty Lord of Decay who presides over all physical corruption and morbidity in Creation. Disease and putrefaction, the. The JDM approach. When I was last out at Liberty Walk a couple months ago shooting its Ferrari F50 and BMW M3, I asked Kato-san about his upcoming Ferrari 458 project. The strange thing was that everyone wasn’t told to go home as soon as this feathery vision of dusty pink gluh-moore whipped his boa train on the carpet. With a cast of six people, it’s not a surprise that many different actors were considered for each role. For example, Kathy Griffin and Jane Lynch actually became friends after meeting while both were auditioning for the part of Phoebe. Both Jon Favreau and Jon Cryer were considered for the role of Chandler before it went to Matthew Perry. And Perry almost didn’t get the gig either. During the 1. 99. LAX 2. 19. 4 in addition to Friends. The show would have been about baggage handlers at LAX who sorted aliens’ luggage. Thankfully, it wasn’t picked up, and Perry was able to take the Friends gig. Before the show premiered, Courteney Cox was probably the most famous cast member. She was known for many commercials plus Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark” music video. The Friends producers originally asked her to play Rachel, but she requested the role of Monica because she liked the “strong” character. Be Afraid MovieThe role of Ross was written for David Schwimmer. This may come as a surprise because Eric Mc. Cormack, the Will of Will & Grace, made news when he said that he auditioned “two or three times” for Ross. But, executive producer Kevin Bright had worked with Schwimmer before, so the writers were already developing Ross’s character in Schwimmer’s voice. And indeed, Schwimmer was the first person cast on the show. The opening credits were shot at Warner Bros studio, not Gramercy Park or Central Park. Don’t let your NYC tour guide trick you into thinking that you’re looking at the fountain from the iconic opening credits featuring “I’ll Be There for You” by The Rembrandts. Unless you’ve brought your tour guide with you to Burbank for some reason. Although the fountain looks a lot like Pulitzer Fountain in Central Park, the actual shoot occurred on a Warner Bros. Once the show comes on the air, you guys will never be able to go anywhere without being hounded.”Friends fans might remember Caesar’s Palace as the place Ross and Rachel got married on a whim in the fifth season finale. Lisa Kudrow hated playing guitar at first. Kudrow later recalled, “I didn’t like the guitar. I wasn’t getting it. So I think I even asked, ‘What if she plays the bongos?’” They ended up bringing a guitar teacher in, but that didn’t last long. Kudrow learned a couple of chords, then announced that she was done with the lessons. The death of Natalie Wood has been mysterious since the moment her body was found floating in the Pacific. She decided that Phoebe would only know a handful of chords anyway. And thank goodness because “Smelly Cat” is perfect just the way it is. Monica was an early mental_floss fan. In the 2. 00. 3 episode "The One With the Soap Opera Party," Monica is shown casually reading a new magazine called mental_floss in Central Perk. We really owe David Arquette a lifetime subscription, because he's the one who made it happen. I thought it was so interesting," he told Entertainment Weekly at the time, "[so] I gave it to Courteney" for the show. It was filmed in front of a live audience—except for cliffhangers. Shooting an episode of Friends was a lengthy process, typically lasting five hours, with multiple takes per scene and 2. Still, the show was filmed in front of a live audience made up of 3. And that’s the way the cast preferred it. It’s kind of like a test to see if the material works, if the jokes work, if the story tracks,” said Le. Blanc. Perry agreed, “Our energy just elevates every time there’s an audience.”So, what wasn’t filmed in front of a live audience? One example is the cliffhanger in the season four finale, “The One With Ross’s Wedding.” At the end of the episode, Ross is about to marry Emily, but accidentally says Rachel’s name at the altar. We couldn’t have an audience for that,” Aniston said. We always remove the audience for the cliffhangers because, obvious reasons, you don’t want to spoil it.”9. Many people, including Lisa Kudrow, thought that Chandler was gay. Kudrow said that she was surprised to hear Perry’s interpretation of Chandler at the first table read because when she first read the script, she thought Chandler was supposed to be gay. And she wasn’t the only one. During the first few seasons of the show, many fans speculated about Chandler’s sexual orientation. In 1. 99. 7, David Crane told. Entertainment Weekly, “No, Chandler isn’t gay. Nor will he be gay.”1. They were the first TV cast to negotiate as a group. During the first season, they were each receiving around $2. But allegedly, by the second season, each actor had a slightly different salary. In 1. 99. 7, all six cast members refused to work until they all earned an equal salary of $1. This was big news. The New York Times reported, “Stars of hit shows often threaten to boycott their series in pursuit of higher salaries. What is unusual is this cast’s effort to use solidarity as leverage.”This negotiation worked very well. By the final season, each cast member was earning $1 million per episode. The apartment numbers switched during the series. At the beginning of the series, Monica’s door had the number 5 on it. The producers later realized that didn’t make sense as Monica lived on a higher floor. They changed her apartment number to 2. The number on Chandler’s apartment changed as well—from 4 to 1. Phoebe Buffay’s twin sister, Ursula, was also a character on Mad About You. Kudrow was already playing Ursula the waitress on Mad About You when she was cast on Friends. NBC and Mad About You encouraged Kudrow to take both roles. According to her, it was the producers of Friends who decided to “address this and say they're twin sisters.” She went on to play Ursula Buffay in eight episodes of Friends as well. Kudrow’s pregnancy was written into the show, but Cox’s was not. Kudrow got pregnant with her son, Julian Murray, in 1. Kudrow was dubious about Phoebe getting pregnant too, but the writers decided to have Phoebe act as a surrogate for her brother’s triplets. On the other hand, in the final season, Cox was pregnant with her daughter, Coco Arquette. This was not written into the show for an obvious reason: the series had already established that Chandler and Monica couldn’t have kids. So, they hid Cox’s pregnancy to the best of their abilities with costumes and props. Joey’s Magna Doodle art became a job for the crew. Loy Chen, You. Tube. Over the years, a few crew members were responsible for drawing on the Magna Doodle on Joey’s door. But in the later seasons, it was primarily a job for Paul Swain, who was the best boy on the electric crew. The Magna Doodle became one of the show’s stars. It sat right in the middle of Joey’s door, so whenever a character walked through that door, the Magna Doodle was prominently displayed. Fans became obsessed with the drawings. Swain said, “They were looking for hidden meanings being given through the Magna Doodle.” You can read descriptions of every Magna Doodle drawing that appeared on the show on this Friends fansite. For the opening credits in “The One After Vegas,” everyone was given the last name “Arquette.”. This episode was the sixth season premiere. It was also the first episode after Courteney Cox married David Arquette. In the credits, her name was switched to “Courteney Cox Arquette” and the other cast members followed suit with new names like “Jennifer Aniston Arquette,” “Lisa Kudrow Arquette,” and so on. You can see the credits above. The episode is dedicated: “For Courteney and David, who did get married.”1. Their characters may have, but the actors didn’t always play well with animals. It was widely publicized that Kudrow was afraid of the duck who made an appearance in season three. Before that, Ross had a pet monkey, Marcel, who was actually played by two monkeys: Monkey and Katie. Marcel was written out of the show in season two because it became too time- consuming to shoot scenes with a monkey. According to Katie’s trainer, Nerissa Politzer, Monkey was once supposed to pick up a bra, but ended up throwing it at Aniston instead. There’s also a fun blooper [at 6: 2. Rachel is trying to explain a TV show to Marcel, but it doesn’t go so well. Cox and Matthew Perry confronted Judd Nelson on a nearby soundstage about an on- set bet. While promoting the show on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Cox told the story of an elaborate bet between her and Perry that later involved the major '8. One day I was on the set, and I was sitting around, reciting this line, like, doing this imitation of Anthony Michael Hall,” she told Leno. He has this line in a movie. The line is, ‘Chicks cannot hold their smoke, that’s what it is.’ And Matthew Perry walks over to me and very adamantly says, ‘Oh, Weird Science.’ And I said, ‘No, Matthew, that’s The Breakfast Club.’ And he was 1. Weird Science and I was 1. The Breakfast Club.”More and more crew members got involved in the debate and the stakes kept rising. We realized that Judd Nelson was over on stage 2. Type: Telugu Movie, Title: Padamati Sandhya Ragam, Year: 1987, Category: Movie, Price: Free. Фильм жанра мелодрама создан в Индия в 1987 году, режиссура: Джадхяла. В главных ролях. After traveling for some time, the entire gang leaves back Aravind and Venu stranded on the road. During this time, the two friends meet Amulya (Shahela) who helps them out of their tricky situation. As expected, Aravind gets attracted to Amulya and decides to propose her during his stay in London. Does Aravind propose to Amulya? What happened to his dream girl? Will Amulya accept Aravind’s love? That forms the rest of the story. Plus Points: -Production values are very good in the film. The entire movie has been shot in London and locations have been superbly chosen. London Ganesh, who acted as hero’s friend impresses with good laughs here and there. Hero Aakash’s special appearance in the proceedings is interesting and he does a very good job. Padamati Sandhya Ragam SongsThe way he guides Aravind has been showcased supremely well. Shahela who played the female lead looks decent and gave a decent performance. Minus Points: –One of the biggest minus points of the film is the routine love story which was presented in the London backdrop. Director Vamsi’s story and screenplay have nothing new to offer and we have seen such concepts since ages. Other than Aakash in a special appearance, no other supporting cast are known faces and do not impress much. The family emotions showcased are so artificial that they irritate you to the core. Being a love story, the chemistry between the lead pair in so unnatural. Hero Chaitu fails to impress with his acting in emotional episodes. Technical Aspects: –The camerawork is not up to the mark. Editing is below par. Coming to the director Vamsi, he completely failed in his story selection as the script is quite stale and routine. The screenplay is so flat and has no interesting moments in it. Music by Kesava Kiran is some what better and his background score impresses in parts. Verdict : –On the whole, Padamati Sandhya Ragam(London Lo) has absolutely nothing new to offer. The sameold storyline and outdated execution will disappoint you completely. All those who want to see some glimpses of the London city can give this film a shot, rest can take it easy. Rating : 1. 7. 5 /5. Reviewed by 1. 23telugu Team. Night at the Museum - Ben Stiller - Movies - Review. The movie begins as a droopy family comedy about the divorced, unemployed Larry Daley (Ben Stiller, ably going through the motions), who is so down and out he may have to move from Manhattan to (gasp!) Queens. It quickly builds to a C. G. I. extravaganza unleashed in the halls of the American Museum of Natural History in New York. There (where the movie wasn’t actually filmed, except for exteriors), its hapless protagonist takes a job as the museum’s night watchman. Larry, oblivious to the strange looks on the faces of the three guards he’s replacing — Cecil (Dick Van Dyke), Gus (Mickey Rooney) and Reginald (Bill Cobbs) — has no idea what’s awaiting him. How Many Night At The Museum MovieNo sooner have they departed, handing him the keys with strict instructions that nothing leave the museum, than the place stirs to life. In no time Larry is playing frightened ringmaster to a rampaging circus of exhibits that have come to life through the magic of a priceless Egyptian tablet. A Tyrannosaurus rex hops off its pedestal and like a famished zombie begins clumping after Larry, who discovers that if he throws it a bone, it fetches like a dog. Cute. A stone head from Easter Island demands bubble gum. And a cheeky monkey named Dexter steals Larry’s keys, tears up his instructions and engages him in a face- slapping routine. At first it seems as though the menacing wild animals (both prehistoric and contemporary) will be Larry’s nemeses. But “Night at the Museum” squeezes the most juice from its historical figures, some life- sized, others miniature, some in dioramas and others on pedestals. The most amusing image is of Mr. Stiller, wide- eyed and floppy- eared, besieged by bands of tiny, finger- sized warriors furiously hurling spears and darts at him. · Night At The Museum helmer Shawn Levy is all set to direct and produce a new remake of the classic 1980s movie. Poughkeepsie. For most of the film, he pines silently after Sacajawea (Mizuo Peck), the famous Indian tracker locked inside the glass case of a Lewis and Clark diorama. Profitable screen time is devoted to the continuing territorial squabble between tiny figurines of Octavius (Steve Coogan), the Roman general, and Jedediah (Owen Wilson, uncredited), a rootin’- tootin’ American cowboy. Bizarrely, the movie gives their dispute a gay subtext. In a slip of the tongue, Octavius addresses Larry as Mary, and Jedediah, quoting from “Brokeback Mountain,” tells Octavius, “I can’t quit you.” I guess it means that nowadays such smidgens of “South Park” humor are thrown into family movies to make everybody feel terribly knowing. But when “Night at the Museum” returns to Larry’s personal life, it dies. The movie doesn’t even make a pretense of being interested in the scenes between Larry and Nick (Jake Cherry), the 1. And its cynical lack of concern for giving the characters human feelings is a grave drawback for a movie that wants to engage children.“Night at the Museum” is rated PG (Parental guidance suggested). Hotel Chevalier is an American-French short film written and directed by Wes Anderson and released in 2007. Starring Jason Schwartzman and Natalie Portman as former. This short is a great little introductory prelude to The Darjeeling Limited, but it works okay on its own, too. The brief narrative concerns a man in a hotel room who. The carefully selected staff at Motel Du Chevalier takes pride in its reputation for the kind of friendly service that keeps guests returning again and again. Hotel Chevalier ScriptShe tells him she is on her way from the airport and asks for his room number. Despite objecting that he did not tell her she could come, the man consents nevertheless. He then hurriedly attempts to tidy the room – pausing to play the opening bars of the song "Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)?" by Peter Sarstedt on his stereo system – and runs a bath. The man is again lying on the bed, now in a gray suit. Hearing a knock, he starts the song playing again before opening the door to a woman (Natalie Portman). After staring at him for several seconds, the woman breaks the silence by asking what music is playing. Receiving no response, she steps into the room and presents the man with a bouquet of flowers. When she moves to kiss him on the mouth, he turns his head away and they embrace instead. He closes the door and asks how she found him; she replies that it "wasn't actually that hard". She moves around the room browsing through his possessions, brushes her teeth with his toothbrush and declines to take the bath he had run for her. Stepping back into the bedroom, the woman turns to face the man and confronts him, asking slowly "what the fuck is going on?" He motions to her to join him on the bed and at her prompting, he reveals in the ensuing conversation that he has been living in the hotel room for "more than a month", and that he had left to escape their relationship. They lie back on the bed looking at one another before being interrupted by the arrival of room service. Once alone again, the two kiss and the man begins to undress the woman. They have an uncomfortable exchange about not having slept with other people and when he notices bruises on her arm after undressing her further, the woman chooses not to comment on them. Lying on top of him, she tells the man that she does not want to lose his friendship, that she loves him and never meant to hurt him. The Hôtel Raphaël in Paris, which was used as the Hotel Chevalier of the film's title and where all of the scenes were shot. Director Wes Anderson first approached actors Schwartzman and Portman about Hotel Chevalier in 2. Schwartzman and Anderson had previously worked on Rushmore (1. Anderson's cult second feature, and had been living together in Schwartzman's Paris apartment in the months leading up to the shoot.[3] Portman was approached after the director obtained her email address from Scott Rudin, producer of 2. Closer in which she starred.[4] The actors appeared for free,[5] and Anderson financed the remainder of the production himself.[6]It was filmed at the Hôtel Raphael in Paris, on Avenue Kléber, two blocks south- southwest of the Arc de Triomphe.[7] The Hôtel Raphael had previously been used as a setting for the films Love in Paris (1. Place Vendôme (1. It was shot by a crew of 1. Panavision and used props from Anderson's apartment.[4][6] Filming took two and a half days, and editing (done on Anderson's computer) another week.[2] Despite his use of a wardrobe from prestigious fashion designer Marc Jacobs and a handmade suitcase from Louis Vuitton, the director described the production as "like making a student film".[4]Anderson initially intended it to be a stand- alone short film,[9] but shortly before filming commenced, he realized that Schwartzman's character bore a close resemblance to one of the protagonists of a feature film he was writing at the time.[2][9] That film would begin production a year later as The Darjeeling Limited.[2]Chevalier takes place two weeks before Schwartzman's character (named Jack Whitman in the feature) joins his two older brothers on a journey in India in Darjeeling.[4] The dialogue between the characters at the end of Chevalier is recounted by Schwartzman's character to his brothers at the close of the feature film, in the form of an excerpt from a short story he has composed.[1. Portman's character has a brief cameo in the feature.[2]Fox Searchlight Pictures, the studio that backed Darjeeling, was unaware of the short until the feature had been made and claimed to have no financial interest in it.[2]Release[edit]When it was all done, I didn't want to incorporate the short into the movie. Hotel Chevalier OnlineBut I couldn't decide how I wanted it to go. I wanted to play the short in front of the movie, but not always. Sometimes I preferred to watch the movie without the short. It became a puzzle to me. So in the end I decided that I would like to have the movie open in America without the short, but I would like people to have access to it if they want to see it first.—Wes Anderson, October 2. Hotel Chevalier was screened as part of the program at the world première of The Darjeeling Limited at the 6. Venice International Film Festival on September 2, 2. The short had its own première at Apple Stores in New York City, Chicago, San Francisco and Santa Monica, California, on September 2. Anderson, Schwartzman and Portman appeared at the New York screening in So. Ho, after which they held a questions- and- answers session with the audience.[2][5] The short was made available the following day as a free download from Apple's i. Tunes Store.[2] On September 2. New York Film Festival.[1. A press release posted before the première described the short as "the brief coda to a doomed romance and the prologue to The Darjeeling Limited".[1. The film was withdrawn from i. Tunes after having been available for download for a month.[1. Although it had been dismissed by USA Today columnist Susan Wloszczyna before its i. Tunes release as an amuse- bouche that was "destined to be a mere footnote",[1. Following its withdrawal from i. Tunes, the short was distributed in theaters as the prologue to the feature- length film.[1. Although The New York Times reported in October 2. Fox Searchlight Pictures intended to promote Chevalier as a competitor for the Best Live Action Short Film of the Academy Awards,[1. It was included as an extra feature on the Darjeeling 2. DVD release,[1. 2] and Anderson's screenplay for the short was published in the Winter 2. Zoetrope: All- Story.[1. Critical reception[edit]Hotel Chevalier was one of the year's most discussed short films,[4] and attracted considerable praise from film critics, who compared it favorably to The Darjeeling Limited. Gary Susman of Entertainment Weekly described it as "an exquisite short story where we learn not much but exactly enough about these two characters", adding that "Chevalier sees Anderson working in his customary jewel- box/dollhouse mode, but the form and length really suit each other here."[1. Armond White of New York Press judged the short "moving and genuinely contemporary", citing its "lost- girl poignancy".[1. The film drew some attention for co- star Natalie Portman's extended nude scene, and for her character's bruised body.[2][2. Portman expressed disappointment at this undue focus, saying "[i]t really depressed me that half of every review … was about the nudity". The episode made the actress reconsider the wisdom of this aspect of her performance,[2. While The Darjeeling Limited did receive generally positive reviews—having attained a 6. Rotten Tomatoes—many of the champions of Hotel Chevalier tended to combine praise of Chevalier with subtle shots at Darjeeling.[2. Portman's performance was praised by TIME reviewer Richard Corliss, who declared her to be "a comic actress in fresh bloom" in the "beguiling vignette", and expressed his wish that her role in Darjeeling had been greater.[1. The feature, he felt, lacked "the feeling and wit of the short film".[1. Stephanie Zacharek of Salon concurred, stating that "the untold story of Hotel Chevalier is 1. The Darjeeling Limited", and calling the short "very close to perfect".[2. The Guardian columnist Danny Leigh contrasted the lukewarm reception of the feature among bloggers and critics with the "genuine ardour" that greeted the "perfectly measured narrative" of Chevalier. He proposed that the constraints of the short- film format suited Anderson, whose trademark deadpan humor, idiosyncratic set designs and choice of soundtrack inclined to exhaust the viewers' patience in a feature- length work.[2. How to "Kill Your Darlings" and Survive the Process. For those of us who’ve been in the writing biz a while, there is a quote by Stephen King we’ve all seen a thousand times (and if you’re new to writing, fear not: you’ll see this quote a thousand times, too).“[K]ill your darlings, kill your darlings, even when it breaks your egocentric little scribbler’s heart, kill your darlings.”Given that Stephen King writes horror, this might be a little misleading without context. This will help: Stephen King was actually quoting William Faulkner, who said: “In writing, you must kill all your darlings.”― William Faulkner. Well, at least now we know we’re talking about writing not homicide. What Are “Darlings” in Writing? Quick: what’s a favorite line from a book you’ve read? The tricky thing is that our own writing has “darlings,” too, and when we love them that fondly, we lose all sense of objectivity. What Is a “Darling” and Why Are They Dangerous? Darlings, in writing, are those words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs, and even chapters that we are often most proud of. We love them, to the point that we almost don’t care if those bits are clear to readers or not. We love them, and we want to keep them. The problem is they can get in the readers’ point of view. Faulkner was right. King was right. The purpose of writing isn’t just for the writer; it’s for the reader, too, and so when we disregard the reader’s needs for the sake of our own, we do the reader a great disservice.“The purpose of writing isn’t just for the writer. So how do you find these darlings? Good news: it’s easier than you think. Kill Your Darlings is a 2013 American biographical drama film written by Austin Bunn and directed by John Krokidas in his feature film directorial debut. How to Find the Darlings in Your Writing. Note: this advice builds on the foundation that you already have something of a writing community, even if it’s just a couple of people who beta- read for you. If you don’t, there’s no better time to find one; we are not meant to write in a vacuum. Critique is never personal. When sane and healthy writers critique one another, they do it to help. The goal is to show what did and did not work; it’s not a statement of personal worth. However, when our written darlings are critiqued, we as writers tend to feel like we’ve been stabbed. And, to quote the Bill Engvall, here’s your sign. If someone says a phrase/paragraph/chapter/sentence didn’t work for them, and in response you want to cry/scream/shout/throw something, it’s a good bet they tripped over one of your darlings. This is hard. The thing a reader trips over usually makes perfect sense to us; it’s that “writer- brain” problem again. And of course, I’m not talking about the kind of phrase one person doesn’t understand and twenty people do; I’m talking about the one twenty people don’t understand and only you, the writer, grasp. Yes. Those phrases/sentences/chapters/etc. They do. BUT. It isn’t a death sentence. You’ll find it a lot easier to handle your darlings if you follow the next simple steps. What do Do About Your Darlings. Here is where I’m going to depart slightly from the quote that inspired this post in the first place: rather than “killing” your darlings (i. I want you to copy them into a separate spare file and put them aside. Here’s why: Remember: when people tell you something’s wrong or doesn’t work for them, they are almost always right. When they tell you exactly what they think is wrong and how to fix it, they are almost always wrong.—Neil Gaiman. He’s onto something here. In my experience, the best results I’ve had with passages readers don’t get is when I remove them from the original work, but not simply in a slash- and- burn technique. First, I save them in a separate file. Seriously. It’s not hard: Open your story file. Cut the section that’s giving your readers trouble. Paste it into a spare file. Save that file—and close it. Nobody is going to make you throw them away completely. Just knowing your beloved phrases don’t have to disappear completely takes a lot of pressure off. See, you may still get to use those darlings—just not where you thought you could. Keep them, by all means, and leave the funerary wear in the closet. Just take your darlings out of the story in question. Next Step After Your Darlings are “Dead”So now what? You removed the offending section, and now there’s a hole in your manuscript. The answer is probably predictable: time for hard work. One: Re- read the section that came before the bit you cut (this is really important). Two: Once you’ve done that, without hesitating, write a new version of the removed scene. The reason you want to do it this way is because the flow of the story will be in your head. If you’re coming off the bit you wrote that worked, the words for the next section will flow like a river in a deep channel. It really only works best if you read what came before and then move into writing the missing bits, as if those bits weren’t missing at all, and you’re just continuing down the road. Don’t be afraid. Write it fresh, and see what happens. I bet you sixteen oranges it comes out better. Trust Your Readers—And Yourself. Your job as a writer is to remove roadblocks so your readers keep reading. I know this is a seriously hard piece of advice. It’s so often the bits we feel are brilliant that need to go, or at least be re- worded.“It’s so often the bits we feel are brilliant that need to go. Here’s the thing: you wrote that brilliant bit. It was not a fluke. You wrote it because you have those words inside you. That means you can do it again, even better. Don’t be afraid. Trust your readers, and trust yourself. Kill (read: copy and paste) your darlings, without the fear that you’ll never write anything as brilliant again. You will do it again, and your writing will only improve. Are You Ready to Kill Your Darlings? Let’s talk about it in the comments section. PRACTICEToday, choose a passage that’s given your beta- readers trouble. First, copy the troublesome bit and put it in a separate file; second, delete it from your original manuscript. Third, re- read the bit that came before your deleted portion. Then, and only then, it’s time for the next step: rewrite it fresh, without stopping. If you like, you can use a timer for fifteen minutes. However, this one doesn’t necessarily need to be timed. It just needs to be done. In the comments below, share your new passage, and if you’re brave, explain what you changed. Don’t forget to comment on three other replies! Ruthanne Reid. Author. Popcorn fiend. Cat- wrangler. Old Fashioned DrinkSome bartenders will muddle a whole orange slice with the sugar cube. Others may muddle an orange peel or even a lemon peel with certain whiskeys. If you choose not to muddle the peel, express it over the drink before dropping it into the glass. To do this, simply twist up the peel and give it a good squeeze (pointed toward the glass, not your eyes!) and bits of citrus oils will spray into the drink. An Old- Fashioned Cocktail a Century Ago. The story of the Old- Fashioned is something modern drinkers can relate to. This cocktail sparked the same debates in the late 1. Century bar scene that the modern 'martini' menus bring up today. It's funny to think that the Old- Fashioned was actually 'old- fashioned' over a hundred years ago, but it's true! It was around the 1. American cocktail scene really got going. Drinks were being created with curacao, absinthe, syrups and fruit juices and they were a hit. There were, of course, the holdouts, those nostalgic drinkers who wanted a simple drink with a kick like they got in the 'old days'; none of this fancy stuff! Editorials were written in newspapers, arguments were raised in bars around the country and soon the Old- Fashioned got its official name. It was first published under the name in Theodore Proulx's (of Chicago's famous Chapin and Gore saloon) 1. Bartenders Manual". The Pendennis Club Myth. It was long believed that the Old- Fashioned was created in 1. Pendennis Club in Louisville, Kentucky. David Wondrich points out in "Imbibe!" that this is false. The club did not open until 1. Chicago Tribune. There was even an "ambiguous newspaper squib" that mentioned old- fashioned drinks as early as 1. The Original Cocktail. In truth, the Old- Fashioned formula dates back to the 1. It could be made with whiskey, brandy or gin (Old Tom or Holland) and was, quite simply, liquor, sugar (not syrup!) and ice. Add bitters and you have the most basic definition of a cocktail. A Historical Note About Ice. Wondrich's book is filled with interesting tidbits of bar trivia and it's one that every cocktail geek should own. Within the Old- Fashioned notes is a fascinating bit about the proper ice to use in an Old- Fashioned. It turns out that ice balls and 2- inch cubes are nothing new; they simply got lost in the American bar until recently. Wondrich references uses in 1. Old- Fashioned with ice cut into 'perfect cubes about two inches on a side'". The same theory that we use for adding a chill and slight dilution to a glass of straight whiskey has long been preferred for an Old- Fashioned. Those fancy ice machines ruined it for many years and I suggest every Old- Fashioned lover revert to the old ways. How Strong Is the Old- Fashioned? As you might imagine, the Old- Fashioned is not much lighter than a straight pour of whiskey. Essentially, we just need to factor in a little dilution. With that, an Old- Fashioned with an 8. ABV (6. 4 proof). Those old- timers would be happy to know that it still has that kick they were looking for! More Old- Fashioned Recipes. Old Fashioned (2. IMDb. Edit.
